Open Letter to Karly Brush - Sport Development Specialist
Submitted By admin on Tuesday, July 11, 2017
Dear Karly,

On behalf of Dundas Little League, we wish to express our concern about the news article published in the Hamilton News on 6 July 2017 (https://www.hamiltonnews.com/news-story/7409692-dundas-veteran-s- park-and-ainslie-wood-s-alexander-park-score-well-in-skate-park-review/), regarding an information report to be presented at the July 12 meeting of the City of Hamilton’s Emergency and Community Services Committee. This article indicates that the report classifies Veteran’s Park in Dundas as a top candidate for a new skate park location, in part due to the having a baseball diamond which “is not well used”.

We disagree with the belief that the baseball diamond at Veteran’s Park is not well used, and believe that access to this baseball diamond is critical for the future success of Dundas Little League as an organization. In 2017, teams in our league are using this baseball diamond up to 4 nights each week and note that our league has seen incredible recent growth (from 223 players in 2015 to 272 this year an increase of over 20%). We have been developing a plan to accommodate the increased number of players, which would also increase the utilization of all the diamonds currently used by Dundas Little League, including the one at Veterans Park.

Further, as residents of the area, we note that the baseball diamond is regularly used as part of Physical Education classes and school sports teams from both Sir William Osler and Dundas Valley Secondary Schools, as well as usage by many local children.

Dundas Little League has been in existence since 1954 and is a member of an organization which includes 2.4 million child participants in over 80 countries world-wide, and we believe that continued use of Veteran’s Park in Dundas as a baseball diamond is essential for the future of our league.

Sincerely,

On Behalf of Dundas Little League,
Amy Yanover, President
Gregory Pond, Vice-President, Baseball
Dave Cheeseman, Safety Officer
Jeff Kozak, Former President
